Coniston Old Man & Brim Fell

Join us for a classic Lake District mountain day exploring the rich mining heritage of the Coniston Fells and ascending two of the area’s most iconic summits: The Old Man of Coniston (803m) and Brim Fell (796m).

Starting in the heart of the traditional Lakeland village of Coniston, this walk follows historic miner’s tracks into the Coppermines Valley, where centuries of copper and slate mining shaped both the landscape and local economy. The route passes through a remarkable industrial archaeology landscape of mine workings, spoil heaps, wheel pits, reservoirs and inclines, providing a fascinating insight into the area’s industrial past.

The copper mines around Coniston were worked from the sixteenth century and became some of the most significant copper mines in Britain. Remains of engine houses, dressing floors, leats and water-powered machinery can still be seen throughout the valley. At its peak, hundreds of miners worked the fellsides above the village, extracting copper ore from deep beneath the mountain.

Beyond the mining remains, the route climbs steadily towards the summit of The Old Man of Coniston, standing proudly at 803 metres above Coniston Water. From the summit cairn, spectacular views stretch across the Southern Fells, Morecambe Bay, the Scafell range, and much of the central Lake District. We then continue along the broad ridge to Brim Fell (796m), offering further panoramic views before returning via the historic mining landscape.
