This classic circular walk ascends three iconic fells—Helvellyn, Raise and Whiteside—offering breathtaking views over the Lake District. Starting from the car park near Swirls on the western side of Thirlmere, the route begins with a steep but well-maintained climb up the flanks of Helvellyn. The path zigzags through the woodland before opening onto the higher fells, where the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic.
Helvellyn, at 950m, is the high point of the walk and rewards the effort with stunning panoramas over Striding Edge, Swirral Edge, and the surrounding peaks.
After taking in the summit views, the route continues north along the ridge to Raise (883m), known for its slightly quieter paths and excellent vistas toward Ullswater and the Northern Fells.
From Raise, the ridge undulates to Whiteside (863m), offering a more rugged and remote feel. The descent from Whiteside follows grassy slopes that gradually lead back toward the Thirlmere valley. The return leg joins the forest paths along the shore of Thirlmere, providing a peaceful end to the walk.
This route offers a mix of challenging ascents, high-level ridge walking, and serene descents, making it a perfect choice for those looking to experience some of the Lake District’s most celebrated peaks.
