Join us for one of the most iconic and beloved walks in the Lake District as we ascend Cat Bells (451m), a fell that has introduced countless people to mountain walking. Although immensely popular throughout the year, our chosen date should allow us to enjoy this classic Lakeland summit while avoiding much of the peak-season crowds.
Starting from the picturesque village of Portinscale, just north of Derwentwater, we follow paths along the lakeshore before climbing onto the famous ridge of Catbells. The route is short by Lakeland standards but delivers outstanding rewards for relatively modest effort, with panoramic views appearing almost immediately as height is gained.
At just 451 metres, Cat Bells is far from the highest mountain in the Lake District, yet it remains one of the most climbed and photographed. Situated on the western shore of Derwentwater and overlooking Keswick, its distinctive profile is instantly recognisable and has become one of the defining images of the National Park.
Alfred Wainwright described Catbells as:
“One of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together.”
Despite its reputation as an accessible mountain, the ridge contains short rocky sections where hands may be used for balance, providing an enjoyable taste of scrambling without significant exposure.
Few summits in the Lake District offer such a remarkable reward for effort. From the top, walkers are treated to breathtaking views over Derwentwater, Keswick, the Newlands Valley, Skiddaw, Blencathra and the surrounding North Western Fells. Many argue that Catbells possesses one of the finest low-level viewpoints in Britain.
The ridge of Catbells is formed from ancient mudstones, siltstones and sandstones that were folded and deformed during the formation of the Lake District hundreds of millions of years ago. The mountain’s unusual name is thought by some to derive from “Cat Bields” meaning a shelter for wild cats, although its true origin remains uncertain.
Throughout the walk we enjoy views across:
