Causey Pike, Scar Crags, Outerside & Barrow

Join us for a superb ridge walk in the North Western Fells, taking in four classic Wainwright summits: Causey Pike (637m), Scar Crags (672m), Outerside (568m) and Barrow (455m). This varied circuit above Braithwaite combines panoramic ridges, a short hands-on scramble, beautiful valleys and some of the best views in the Lake District.

Starting from the village of Braithwaite, we head into the stunning landscapes of Coledale and Newlands, two of the most beautiful valleys in Lakeland. Our route gradually builds towards the unmistakable profile of Causey Pike, one of the most recognisable mountains in the Lake District, famous for its distinctive ridgeline and “knuckled” summit profile.

Causey Pike – A Wainwright Favourite

Despite its modest height, Causey Pike is often considered one of the most enjoyable fells to climb. The final approach includes a short, straightforward scramble requiring hands to assist progress, making it an excellent introduction to easy scrambling without significant technical difficulty. The summit rewards walkers with spectacular views across Derwentwater, Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Helvellyn Range and the surrounding North Western Fells.

Following the Coledale Ridge

From Causey Pike, we continue along the delightful ridge to Scar Crags, where the expansive views over Coledale begin to open fully. We then descend towards Outerside, one of Lakeland’s underrated viewpoints. Its grassy summit offers arguably one of the best perspectives of the famous Coledale Horseshoe, with the imposing peaks of Grisedale Pike, Sail and Crag Hill dominating the skyline.

The final summit of the day is Barrow, a small but beautifully positioned fell overlooking Braithwaite. Its open summit provides an excellent final viewpoint before our descent back to the village.

Industrial Heritage

The surrounding valleys contain a fascinating mining history. The Newlands Valley was once home to lead, cobalt and copper mining activity. Historic smelting works, mine levels and spoil heaps remain hidden within the landscape, providing a reminder of the area’s rich industrial heritage and the skilled miners who worked these remote valleys centuries ago, including German miners who settled in the area during the sixteenth century.
