Blencathra via Hall’s Fell Ridge

Join us for an exhilarating ascent of Blencathra (868m), one of the most iconic mountains in the Lake District, via the superb Hall’s Fell Ridge. This classic route offers an ideal introduction to mountain scrambling, combining hands-on terrain, spectacular exposure, and some of the finest summit views in Cumbria.

Starting from the traditional Lakeland village of Threlkeld, we make our way towards the foot of the mountain before ascending onto the narrow crest of Hall’s Fell Ridge. The ridge rises directly to Hallsfell Top, the highest point of Blencathra, providing a thrilling and memorable mountain experience throughout.

A Classic Lakeland Scramble

Often described as one of the finest Grade 1 scrambles in the Lake District, Hall’s Fell Ridge provides an excellent opportunity to experience hands-on mountain terrain in a controlled and supportive environment. The route requires the use of hands to negotiate rocky steps and short scrambling sections, making it ideal for walkers looking to develop confidence on more technical ground.

As Alfred Wainwright famously wrote:

“For active walkers and scramblers, this route is positively the finest way to any mountain top in the district.”

Sharp Edge… Another Day

Whilst many walkers associate Blencathra with the dramatic Sharp Edge, that famous ridge will be saved for another adventure as part of our dedicated Scramble Series. Hall’s Fell Ridge offers an equally rewarding experience whilst providing an excellent progression for those looking to build scrambling skills and confidence on exposed mountain terrain.

History and Legend

Blencathra is steeped in local folklore and legend. The mountain has long been associated with Arthurian mythology, with some traditions claiming that King Arthur and his knights lie sleeping beneath the mountain, awaiting the day they are called upon once more. The fell was also one of Wainwright’s personal favourites, and he devoted more pages to its ridges and routes than almost any other mountain in his famous guidebooks.

Outstanding Views

From the summit ridge, weather permitting, we can enjoy panoramic views across:

  • Threlkeld and the Greta Valley
  • Derwentwater
  • Skiddaw
  • Helvellyn
  • The Northern and Central Fells
  • The Pennines
  • The Solway Coast on exceptionally clear days
