Helvellyn, hailed as ‘Britain’s favourite hike,’ beckons adventurers to its summit. While ascending England’s third-highest peak is a coveted achievement for Wainwright enthusiasts, this particular route from Thirlmere offers a safer alternative. By bypassing the renowned Striding and Swirral Edges, this path caters to a wider range of hikers.
Beginning at the Wythburn Church car park, the trail ascends steeply towards the open fellside above. Amidst the rugged terrain, the path remains distinct, leading into a steep-sided valley where the incline moderates before ascending sharply along the right slope. Progressing, the landscape transitions to gentle, grassy slopes with stunning vistas of Thirlmere and the solitary silhouette of Skiddaw in the distance.
Navigating around small crags, the ascent continues up the right slope, offering a challenging yet manageable climb. While the path becomes faint and nearly vanishes in the final stretch, this route is best attempted in clear weather conditions for optimal safety and enjoyment. Eventually, the main path is rejoined, guiding hikers leftward towards the summit, standing proudly at 3116 feet (950 meters) above sea level, marking the third highest point in the Lake District.
